How To Get Your Hair Summer Ready

Picture driving with the windows down, rooftop open, the sun touching your shoulders. Closer by the Chainsmokers is on the radio and your hair is flowing in the wind…but you don’t even care about your messed up hair – WAIT, you actually do care about your messed up hair!

If you’re like us, the feeling of Summertime never fails to fill you with bliss, but the process of preserving your hair health…. not so much. Below we have some of the best hair hacks for you this Summer to ensure that if your hair’s going to be a mess, it’s going to be a hot mess!

Leave-In Conditioner

The warm sand and cool ocean breeze have most of us eagerly anticipating our next beach trip. There’s nothing quite as unsatisfying about the beach, than beach hair. And no, we’re not talking about gorgeous, effortless beach waves… but rather the dry, knotted dilemma that just sits on your head begging for you to deal with it. Luckily, there’s a solution to the chaos and its called (drumroll please) leave-in conditioner! It hydrates and keeps your hair silky smooth despite the damage and many formulas even include added UV ray protection. I mean think about it, if the sun is damaging to our skin, just think about what it does to our hair! You’re welcome.

Lemon Juice

If you spend hundreds of dollars getting your hair lightened, then you might want to reconsider. Of course, it’s always best to go to a professional but if you’re low on funds you can get some natural, sun-kissed looking locks by using lemon juice. Yes, we said lemon juice. It organically strips color from the hair, giving the sun the ability to bleach it. All you have to do is spritz a little into your hair, bask out in the sun, and voila! You can even add oil into the mixture to prevent your hair from drying out.

Water

You’ve heard it all before but water really is your best friend. Our bodies are composed of about 60% of it and we need to constantly hydrate with approximately 2-3 liters per day to supplement the amount we lose. It’s no surprise that your water intake effects your hair health. If you’re dehydrated, skin cells dry up which can lead to having a dry scalp… do you want dandruff? Didn’t think so. Water strengthens our hair’s energy level and keeps it looking luscious, thick, and strong.

Sea-Salt Hair Spray

Now, we understand that not everybody enjoys going into the ocean, probably because of Jaws, but we don’t need to get into that right now. If you’re not a fan of diving into the unknown, then get some sea-salt spray from your local Target or you can create your own. There are different ways to go about it, but one in particular is:

Fill a spray bottle with warm water and sea salt and give a shake. Then, in a separate bowl, mix together some coconut oil and leave-in conditioner. Add the coconut oil/leave-in conditioner mixture to the spray bottle with warm water and sea salt. Shake it one more time, spray it in your hair, and bada-bing bada-boom – your hair now looks like Gigi Hadid’s.

Extra Tips…

Blondes:

If you have blonde hair you know the struggle of chlorine occasionally turning your hair into a brassy, greenish shade. Here you are just trying to enjoy a dip in the pool on a hot Summer day, but you have to risk coming out of the chlorinated water looking like a chia pet!

Lucky for you there’s a well-known hack that is meant to treat this: BAKING SODA, I got bakin’ soda (please tell us you know the song reference). Mix some baking soda with water and this will create a paste. If you rub this substance into your hair, rinse it out with water, then use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any remnants, you can say so long to your Oscar the Grouch looking hair! Hopefully this will turn your brass to blonde class!

Dry Hair:

If you have dry hair in general, resist the towel dry this summer and use a T-shirt instead. We know how weird this may sound, but you can’t knock it till you try it! By drying off your hair with a t-shirt, the cotton engrained in it will soak up the excess water! Rather than a terry cloth towel pulling lots of the moisture out of your hair, the T-shirt doesn’t AND it decreases the frizz in your hair as well! So grab your favorite Justin Bieber Purpose Tour Tee and put it to work!

Sensitive Skin:

If your scalp burns easily, first of all ouch – our condolences, but secondly we are fantastic at problem solving! Take your favorite sunscreen (preferably Hawaiian Tropic because it smells like coconut), dilute it with a bit of water, and pour that mixture into a spray bottle. Now you can spritz it onto your scalp and work it at the beach without lobsters confusing you as one of their own. It’s a perfect solution and definitely helps you avoid getting your hair all greasy and turning your locks into a white mess!

Now, as the wise men of NSYNC once said, Bye, Bye, Bye. Have the best summer ever beauties and don’t forget to try out these tips!
