The Key To Better Skin Starts In The Bedroom
The time we spend sleeping has a significant effect on our skin. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason. Below, we’ve compiled a list of skincare tips you can implement during those hours of shut-eye. Don’t worry, we kept it simple.
Adjust Your Sleeping Position
This one is for all the side sleepers out there. Did you know that sleeping with your face against a pillow can lead to permanent skin damage? This popular sleeping position is known to cause face wrinkles and collagen dysfunction. To keep your skin looking healthy and youthful, try to sleep on your back. Not only does it allow for better blood circulation, but sleeping on your back can also help improve spine and neck health.
Use Silk Pillowcases
If you can’t avoid putting your face in a pillow then… put it in a silk pillow. The switch from cotton to silk pillowcases can help with anti-aging and hair health because, unlike common cotton pillowcases that absorb moisture, silk pillowcases seal it in. For those with sensitive and acne-prone skin, most silk pillowcases are hypoallergenic which help you avoid any further irritation.
Avoid Sleeping On Two Pillows
To help with skin inflammation you should prop your head up on only one pillow. This will drain any fluid build-up from salt you consumed during the day. Even though tons of people may find more comfort in using two or more pillows, that method lifts your head up too high and causes your body weight to be unevenly distributed. Using a singular pillow helps keep your body aligned, allowing your skin to reap ALL the beautifying benefits of sleep! Oh yeah, say goodbye to those puffy morning eyes.
Clean Your Sheets Often
When was the last time you washed your sheets? Bed sheets should be switched out every week or two at the MOST, because when you sleep your body sheds dead skin cells and transfers other bacteria onto your sheets and pillowcases. Yes, it’s totally gross. What’s worse is that the debris can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Let’s keep it real… what’s better than clean bed sheets? Nothing.
Get A Humidifier
The moisture in your room can either dry your skin out or keep it hydrated. Try to keep a humidifier in your room that’ll work overnight to keep your skin dewy and hydrated. You can even add drops of an essential oil instead to the water in the humidifier to create an environment that is both calming and hydrating.
Use Moisturizer Generously
I’m sure you know this already, but slather on the moisturizer! Preferably one that contains hyaluronic acid which helps your skin retain water. This will result in a dewy and plump complexion. Be sure to keep a glass of water on your nightstand as well, so you can hydrate from the inside out.
Keep Your Hair Out Of Your Face
Hair products such as conditioners and hairspray are not meant for the face. To avoid skin irritation, use a nice silk scarf or a loose hair tie to keep your locks away from your pores. However, be careful to not tie your hair back too tight because that can lead to hair breakage and tension headaches.
Now you’re fully prepared to get the most out of your beauty sleep!
