If you love beauty as much as we do, then 13-year-old Reuben de Maid is someone you must follow. While you were probably annoying the dog $hit out of your parents at 13, Reuben has already made his mark in the digital sphere. While it is not unusual for kids of Reuben’s generation to become famous on the Internet, *queue Sophia Grace*, it is unusual to see a young person living as proudly and loudly as he does. Seriously, how many 13 year old kids do you know that garner the attention from the likes of Kim Kardashian-West or Ellen DeGeneres? There are beauty bloggers twice and thrice his age who still dream of it! To say the least, we are quite impressed by this young man and are happy we had the opportunity to catch up with him for a short interview. Scroll below and get to know this fabulous young man a little better.

When did you first find your passion for makeup?

I think it was four or five years ago while I was watching DIY videos YouTube. Watching those videos led me to finding DIY videos on how to make your own foundation. After I watched it, I began to explore more makeup videos on YouTube and became obsessed! There are so many different things out there now, it’s different than how it used to be. 

Which person were you first inspired by?

It was such a long time ago, I wish I remembered. I think I started with watching makeup tutorials of women on YouTube. Eventually, I ended up watching Manny MUA, Nikkie Tutorials, Laura Lee, and other people like that. I also watched a few beginner stuff to get the basics of makeup application down.

How much time do you normally spend on your makeup routine?

I usually give myself two hours. That’s enough time to settle down, find a show to watch on Netflix, plug my phone into the charger, and spend time perfecting my makeup. 

And what kind of makeup is that for, everyday or going out?

To be honest with you, it’s for my everyday look. I probably do the same amount of makeup for everyday and going out looks. I guess that’s just how I like to do my makeup for now.

So watching Netflix and doing your makeup are fun, relaxing things for you?

100% yes. Netflix & makeup.

What are some makeup products you swear by?

If I had to do just a couple things on my face it would be eyebrows, mascara, and different tones of concealer. I like concealer because you use them as bronzers or highlighters. It’s hard to choose exactly which brands I would use though! I think for brows I would go with Benefit Cosmetics’s Gimme Brow+, because it has a little spoolie brush along with color. For mascara, I’d go with the MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash; and for concealer, I would do MAC Pro Longwear or Tarte Shape Tape.

What made you want to start vlogging?

Watching makeup tutorials on YouTube inspired me to do my own makeup. I’m proud of who I am and want to inspire other people to feel the same way after watching my videos. I practice different makeup techniques, adapt them to my style, then share them once I’m comfortable. I also think it’s important since I’m a boy who wears makeup! Makeup should be for everyone and I really just want to get that message across. 

Who are your favorite beauty influencers right now?

I think it’d be Nikkie Tutorials, Jeffree Star, and Manny MUA. I also love Laura Lee, Gabriel Zamora, and Nikita Dragun.

How do you feel when you see your fans recreating the looks you put on Youtube?

I absolutely love it! It’s one of my favorite things. I recreated a lot of makeup looks done by gurus, so it’s an honor to see other people doing it with mine. 

How do you want people to feel after they watch your videos?

I want them to feel inspired to do whatever it is that makes them happy. I also want them to know that no matter what gender or race they are, they are free to do their makeup however they want.  

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to be a recording artist who is known for their red carpet glamour! I want to have range in the way I apply makeup – that’s kind of an end goal for me. Finally, I want to expand my reach to millions of people who find inspiration from boys like me.
